PHONE A FRIEND
You can't always rely on the sales assistant to tell you if your bum really does look big in those skinny jeans. For a second opinion take an honest friend along with you when you go shopping.
SMOKE AND MIRRORS
Changing-room mirrors can be deceptive - don't forget to look at your reflection from the back. If the jeans are wrinkled on the backs of your legs, you need to go up a size.
TAKE AWAY
If you can't make up your mind in the store, buy them and try them on again at home, where you will feel less pressured. But first remember to ask about the returns policy as some stores may offer a voucher instead of your money back.
STAND TALL
Take a pair of high heels with you when you're trying on jeans. It's difficult to tell whether they really look good on you when there's loads of fabric scrunched up around your ankles.
COLOURED
This summer we'll all be wearing acid-bright jeans. But if you're curvy, steer clear of the truly in-your-face shades that won't flatter and opt for slimming darker blues and purple.
HIGH-WAISTED
These were a big trend last season and they're here to stay. Team with a fitted blouse for a smart-casual day look. Great if you're blessed with long legs but also good for holding in a muffin top - just wear them with a long top to hide your tummy and a belt to cinch in your waist.
FLARES
The 70s look is big for spring/summer. Wear with a high wedge to give your legs a long, lean shape and to prevent your flares dragging on the ground.
BOOTLEG
The old favourites are back with a vengeance - probably because they look good on most body shapes. Perfect if you have wide hips or a big bottom as the wide leg will balance you out and make your hips seem smaller. Team with a pair of killer heels to get longerlooking legs.
STRAIGHT
These are superflattering - perfect if you want the skinny look without squeezing yourself into drainpipes. Extra fabric will also hide muscly calves.
